The “Real Story of Kerala”
There was a lot of talk about how fake “The Kerala Story” was, but here is a beautiful movie based on a true story from Malappuram about Zubeidaa and Abdul Aziz Haji, a Muslim couple from the village of Kalikavu in the district of Malappuram, Kerala, who take care of their Hindu housekeeper Chakki’s three kids without trying to convert them.

In a press interview, Paravoor said that he first heard about this story in July 2019 when Sreedharan wrote on Facebook about the death of his “umma,” which means mother in Malayalam. People were shocked and confused by the news, wondering how a Hindu person could call his mother “umma.”
In answer, Sreedharan spoke beautifully about how his relationship with his adoptive Muslim parents went beyond religious labels. He said that love and unity should win out over religion differences and that this touching story of unity was what Kerala was “truely” about.

According to Sreedharan, who wrote the movie, Umma and Uppa (the mother and father) had three children, one of whom was Joshina. She was born a few years after we took safety in their home.
We never felt like we were different or like we belonged to a different church, though. It was the only house that made me feel like it was my own. Elders also told me that the umma used to breastfeed both Jafar and me.

In his Facebook post, Sreedharan told the story of his life to show that the “real story of Kerala” is one of love and family. Every day in the state, these kinds of peaceful interactions between people happen.
He once asked his Umma and Uppa why they didn’t become Muslims like him and his sisters. It made them a little worried when they heard this. The two of them asked me if anyone had said anything bad about me. They told me that we shouldn’t let faith define anyone when I told them there was nothing like that.
According to him, all faiths teach people to love and help each other. He also said that people often get religion or its teachings wrong.
“Umma also taught us that religion doesn’t matter.” We used to put sandalwood paste on our foreheads when we went to the temple with my sisters. She didn’t care about it. They only wanted us to be honest, not steal, and not hurt other people. We also promised ourselves that we would never do anything that would make her look bad, he said.
Sreedharan also knows that his family’s caste past would have made things very different for him and his sisters if Zubeidaa hadn’t adopted them. I believe we are from a lower group. People expected us to be obedient to them when we were kids.
That’s how people lived back then. But Uppa and Umma taught us not to do that, so our family could live together happily. He said, “She told us not to bow down to anyone for no reason.”
When Siddiq, the director of the movie, got to Zubeidaa’s town and heard her touching story, he was shocked. Kalikavu was her town, and everyone there knew and loved her. She didn’t spend her family’s money on herself; instead, she gave it to people in need.
Zubeidaa used to buy him and his sisters clothes and jewellery. She had about 12 acres of land that she gave to people in need. She even borrowed money to help poor people. She owed about Rs 28 lakh when she died. In the end, his older son paid back this loan.
It was Aziz Haji himself who took the first picture, Siddiq says. They were all glad that Zubeidaa and how kind she was to others would become better known. Aziz Haji passed away a year later during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was sad.
Siddique, the director, says, “People are good by nature.” But sometimes we need stories like these to remember how good people are. In this time of hate and false information, Zubeidaa should be remembered, and her story should be told again.

The Fake Story About Kerala
